“Excuse me sir, but do you happen to be my ex-husband?”
That’s not really the type of thing you like to ask someone that you have encountered on an Internet marketing forum, is it? I mean, hell, picture the PM message you’d be sending. “Hi, Alphamale508, this may be an improper question, but were you ever married to me?”
Nevertheless, its the sort of situation that can occur in this Wonderful, Wacky, World Wide Web.
A few days ago at the Warrior Forum, I came across a man with the same name as my ex. Not only did he have the same name, but he also came from Canada. I did a double take. Could it possibly be him? I looked at the guy’s profile but it didn’t offer any information that helped me.
I decided it was just a coincidence and didn’t make any effort to contact the man. As I said above, how exactly, would you word something like that anyway? So you don”t come across looking like a complete fool, that is?
So what’s the point of this ramblng? It’s this. On the Internet, you never know who you’re going to meet up with. The gal on your email list could be an old friend from high school years. The person you’re chatting with on Skype could be the former employer who fired you for messing up. The guy on the forum could be your long lost ex. Or your parole officer.
It’s easy to fall into thinking that your online identify is separate from who you were before you became an Internet marketer. But ‘taint necessarily so. Our past reputation shows up to haunt us when least expected. We’re not free from what used to be. The karma continues, as the spiritual ones would say.
Its food for thought. I reminds me to be a little kinder to people who send me emails that I consider “dumb” or “inappropriate.” Maybe the person I’m ignoring or sending a smart-ass message to is someone from my past that I deeply respected, or who did something helpful and considerate. Maybe, on the other hand, the person I’m emailing and asking for a joint venture or a link swap is the guy who did me wrong in high school or the guy I cheated on when I was young and silly.
Ah well. As the saying goes, “Be good, young miss, and if you can’t be good, be careful.”
